COMMUNICATION COACHING

What is communication coaching?

Communication coaching works on how you land with other people: in meetings, in presentations, in disagreement, and in the conversations you have been putting off. Some of it is technical, such as structure and delivery. Most of it is about what you are willing to say and what happens when you say it.

Part of our career coaching practice

The expensive part is what goes unsaid

Most people who come here can already speak perfectly well. They speak well in low-stakes situations constantly.

What they cannot do is say the thing that might land badly. The disagreement gets softened until it is no longer a disagreement. The concern gets raised as a question so it can be withdrawn. The no becomes a yes with conditions nobody will enforce. From outside it looks accommodating. From inside it is a running account of things nobody else knows about.

That has a cost, and it is rarely the one people expect. It is not that they get walked over, though sometimes they do. It is that the unsaid things do not go anywhere. They sit there, and they turn into resentment aimed at people who never knew there was a problem.

The other cost is that your yes stops meaning anything. If you agree to everything, nobody can tell when you actually agree, including you.
The reframe: withholding an honest response is not kindness. It is usually protecting yourself from a moment of discomfort at the expense of information the other person needed. Telling someone what they want to hear, when it is not true, sets them up to be more disappointed later.

Who this is for

You say yes and mean something else.

The most common starting point. Requests get accepted automatically, and the accounting happens privately afterwards.

You avoid one specific conversation.

With a manager, a colleague, a family member. You have rehearsed it for months and not had it.

Disagreement goes one of two ways.

Either you fold, or it escalates further than intended. The middle setting is missing.

You are fine one to one and not in the room.

Meetings, presentations, or any group where the stakes rise and something contracts.

You have been told you are hard to read.

Or too soft, or too blunt. Worth working out which is accurate and which is somebody else’s problem.

You are stepping up and it now matters more.

More visibility, harder rooms, and the habit that was survivable before is not.

How the sessions work

We start with a specific situation.

Not communication in general. An actual conversation you avoided, a meeting that went wrong, a message you rewrote nine times. The general pattern shows up inside the specific case faster than the other way round.

We work out what you were protecting.

There is nearly always something. Someone’s feelings, a relationship, your own image as easygoing, the discomfort of a moment. Naming it changes what you do with it.

We build the actual words.

Not scripts, but the shape of a sentence you would be willing to say. For most people the block is that they cannot imagine any version of the sentence existing, so building one is the unlock.

Then reps, small ones first.

One honest answer where a reflexive yes used to go. Then something larger. Then the conversation you have been carrying.

Then we look at what happened.

This is the part that changes things. The feared reaction mostly does not arrive, and recorded honestly that becomes evidence rather than reassurance.

How the Method applies

Clarity.

What actually happened in the situation, versus the story about how it would have gone if you had spoken. The predicted disaster is usually assumption, not evidence.

Ownership.

How another person reacts is not yours. What you say and when is. This distinction does more work here than anywhere else in our practice.

Direction.

Not becoming blunt. Becoming someone whose yes means something. That is the destination and it is more specific than it sounds.

Momentum.

Reps, tracked, with the outcomes recorded. The change compounds because each honest exchange that goes fine makes the next one cheaper.

What we do not do

We do not teach you to be forceful. Assertiveness training that turns considerate people into blunt ones swaps one problem for another, and it does not hold anyway because it is not who you are.

We do not hand you scripts for difficult conversations. Real conversations diverge from the script in the first thirty seconds. What survives is knowing what you actually want to say.

We are not therapists. If what is underneath is trauma or a clinical issue, we will tell you rather than coach around it.

From our case studies

The person who never delivered bad news. A professional carrying a running list of things unsaid, and the reps that changed it. The feared reaction mostly did not arrive, and writing that down mattered more than being told to speak up.

Questions

Partly. We work on presentations and speaking with impact. But most clients here have a harder problem than a stage, which is a person.

Frequently. Plenty of confident, senior people avoid specific conversations. Confidence in general and honesty in a particular relationship are unrelated skills.

Some people are, and no amount of good communication fixes them. What changes is that you stop absorbing the cost silently. Where the honest answer is that the relationship or role is the problem, we will say so.

Some will recalibrate, and that is named at the start as a real cost. People used to an automatic yes will notice when it stops. In our experience most relationships improve, because the alternative was a slow accumulation of resentment nobody could address.

Uncomfortable for a while, then not. That timeline is worth knowing at the start so the discomfort does not get read as proof it is not working.

No. Interview work is about describing your own record accurately. This is about saying things to other people, including things they may not want to hear.
