EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING COACHING
What is executive functioning coaching?
Executive functioning coaching works on the mental systems behind getting things done: planning, starting tasks, organising, prioritising, and managing time. It is practical and systems-led rather than motivational, and it is aimed at people for whom these processes do not run automatically.
Part of our performance coaching practice

This is a systems problem, not a character problem
Almost everyone who arrives here has spent years being told they need to try harder, care more, or be more disciplined. Many have concluded there is something wrong with them.
Here is the thing that advice misses. If effort were the missing ingredient, the problem would have been solved long ago, because people in this situation typically expend enormous effort. What they lack is not willpower. It is a structure that does not require willpower at the moment of starting.
Executive function covers a specific set of processes: holding a plan in mind, breaking something large into a first step, beginning without an external trigger, tracking several things at once, and judging how long anything will take. Those are capacities, not virtues. When they are weak, the answer is external structure that carries the load rather than internal effort applied harder.
Practically, that changes the whole approach. Instead of asking why you did not start, we ask what would have made starting require less of what you do not have. That is a considerably more useful question and it produces answers you can act on.
Who this is for
Time estimation is unreliable.
Things take three times longer than expected, or you postpone something for a week that turns out to take twenty minutes.
You are organised in bursts.
A new system, a week of excellent adherence, then abandonment. Several abandoned systems by now.
Prioritising by urgency only.
Everything is done at the last possible moment, driven by the pressure rather than the plan.
You have an ADHD diagnosis, or suspect one.
Many of our clients here do. Coaching addresses the practical systems, not the clinical picture.
How the sessions work

We make tasks smaller than feels reasonable.
Task initiation improves dramatically when the first step is small enough to be nearly trivial. This is not a motivational trick. It reduces the actual cognitive load of starting.

We build external structure.
Anything held in working memory is at risk. The aim is getting it out of your head and into something reliable, in a form you will actually maintain rather than the most elegant system available.

We adjust rather than replace.
When something stops working we change the part that broke. Replacing whole systems is how people accumulate a graveyard of abandoned apps.
